Multnomah Falls & Surroundings

This section of the Columbia River Gorge features Oregon's tallest waterfall and several neighboring cascades.

More than 90 waterfalls line the Oregon side of the Gorge, but Multnomah Falls draws the most visitors. A $2 Timed Use Permit is required for personal vehicles at the Exit 31 parking lot from late May to early September.

Booking a commercial tour bypasses the need for individual summer permits. Expect slippery rocks and mud on the trails, especially on the trail switchbacks.

Multnomah Falls

1-2 hoursCrowded trails

Oregon's tallest waterfall drops 620 feet into a rocky pool. The site features the historic Benson Bridge spanning the lower cascade. Walk up to the bridge to feel the mist, but expect heavy crowds during peak times.

Wahkeena Falls

30 mins0.2-mile steep hike

This 242-foot cascading waterfall translates to 'most beautiful' in the Yakama language. It flows over a tiered rock face rather than a straight drop. Take the steep 0.2-mile hike to the stone bridge at the base for a closer look.

Horsetail Falls

15 minsRoadside access

Horsetail Falls drops 176 feet directly beside the historic highway. The cascade is shaped distinctly like a horse's tail. You can see it from your tour vehicle, but stepping outside provides a much better angle.
